What is DESIGN VOICE?

AIA DESIGN VOICE enables the greater design community to connect and collaborate with organizations and individuals interested in and engaged in housing advocacy, development and community building in Austin.

We intend to develop an open RESOURCE (database) which will make it easier and faster to understand the contexts of community based work in Austin so that more people can engage faster.

We are an ACTION group - we will act as a local facilitator for the national pro bono program ‘The 1%’ by Public Architecture. The basic principle is that architects + designers and related disciplines donate 1% of their time to services rendered in the public interest. We will assist local non-profits to identify their needs and match those with the local volunteer army we intent to mobilize.

We do not wish to duplicate any efforts; we intent to enhance + support + assist already existing efforts. We are an energy boost to Austin’s housing development and community building efforts.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.
Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Hello all,
I work for Project Transitions, a local HIV/AIDS non-profit that runs an HIV/AIDS hospice and three housing programs. I would love to connect up with local designers and architects with an eye towards design/renovation/remodeling for our program sites. I won't be able to attend the mixer tonight at Red House, but will attend future Design Voice events.

AIA DESIGN VOICE recently launched a graphic design competition to create a logo and identity for us.

We received several interesting and creative submissions - thanks to all who participated - and we were very happy to choose from the thoughtful ideas and concepts.

The core DV group voted and....we have a winner:

1. Prize - Marina Petric -
$500 Gift Certificate to Ligne Roset

2. Prize - Herman Dyal -
$30 Gift Certificate to El Chile

Congratulations!! And many thanks to the very generous sponsors of both prizes.

Attached is a pdf file with all the entries and the winning logo as a separate file.

We are working on our web presence - we'll be in touch again as soon as we are online.

Also, please see an article currently posted on the AustinIST Architecture Guest Writer Series - it describes a project that a great team of DV'ers recently completed. http://austinist.com/2009/08/05/architecture_in_austin_-_guest_writ_4.php

Until soon.

A huge thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who helped with the HousingWorks physical model! Thank you, thank you for making this first DESIGN VOICE project happen. Catherine, an especially big thank you to you for all your hard work!! Many thanks also to Greg, Christine, Emily, Adrienne, Peter, Kijuan, and Crystal - we could not have done this without your great assistance.

The model looks really good and we think this will be a very useful tool. It will be on display and in action at the upcoming HousingWorks 'Spotlight on Design' Reception on 10 June, 4:30pm at the Long Center - this will be a very informative event hosted by HousingWorks in cooperation with AIA DESIGN VOICE. See the event section for more details.

Again, many thanks to the volunteers!

Hello all!
Here are a few lines pieced together from what we already have on this site that you can use when corresponding with groups that might need our help. Feel free to copy and paste. Thanks!

"AIA DESIGN VOICE is a resource and action group that assists local non-profits to identify their needs and match those with volunteers.AIA DESIGN VOICE works to enable connections between the greater design community, local non-profit organizations, and individuals in respect to issues such as housing advocacy, development and community building in Austin. Our developing database makes it easier and faster to understand the contexts of community based work in Austin so that more people can engage more quickly.

We do not wish to duplicate any efforts; we intent to enhance + support + assist already existing efforts, so we are contacting you to see what work is being done in your neighborhood or community and what still needs to be done with which we can help. If you do currently have any projects going on that apply to the issues previously mentioned, we love to hear about them. If there's anything we can to to increase the community design of your area, we are eager to help. "

So this is not just an Austin thing but extends to San Antonio also?

Eva, love the new vision as you've written it! I will miss next week's navigation meeting but can attend the following Monday. In the mean time, let me know if there is something I can read up on and contribute virtually.
